Biography in English
Agastya (Tamil: Agathiyar) is one of the most extraordinary figures in Indian — and specifically Tamil — intellectual and spiritual history. He is simultaneously the Father of the Tamil Language, a Vedic sage of the highest order, the author of foundational works on Siddha medicine, an astronomer whose name adorns a star, a yogi of legendary accomplishment, and the traditional author of Nadi astrology.
In Tamil tradition, Agastya composed the first Tamil grammar work — Agathiyam — which predates even Tolkappiyam, the oldest surviving Tamil grammar. Lord Shiva himself commissioned Agastya to carry the Tamil language to the southern regions of India, entrusting the language's systematic development to this remarkable sage. This mission took Agastya from Kailash to Pothigai Hills (Agastyamalai, now in the Tirunelveli-Kerala border region), where he established his hermitage and taught generations of students.
His Vedic credentials are equally impressive. Among the earliest Rig Vedic hymns (1.165-1.191) are attributed to Agastya — making him one of the earliest named poets in human literary history. The Agastya Samhita is attributed to him, and his name appears throughout the Mahabharata, Ramayana, and Puranas in contexts of enormous spiritual significance.
The astronomical reference is particularly striking: Canopus, the second brightest star in the night sky, is called 'Agastya' in Indian astronomy. This star is used for navigation in the Southern Hemisphere and holds sacred significance in Tamil Nadu's traditional calendar. Its appearance in the southern sky marks the beginning of specific ritual seasons. That a star is named after him suggests his legendary association with the heavens and with the mathematical intelligence that could map the cosmos.
In Siddha medicine, Agastya's contributions are catalogued in over a dozen attributed texts. The Agathiyar 12000 is a comprehensive medical encyclopedia covering hundreds of medicinal plants, mineral preparations, and treatment protocols. The Agathiyar Ratna Churnam describes mineral-based medicines (churna preparations). The Agathiyar Vaithiyam 600 provides 600 medical formulations.
Perhaps most remarkable is Agastya's Nadi astrology tradition. Across Tamil Nadu, palm-leaf manuscripts attributed to Agastya (Agastya Nadi Jothidam) are consulted by seekers of all backgrounds. The manuscripts claim to contain individualized prophecies revealed by Agastya for specific human beings — identified through thumbprint characteristics. Whether these manuscripts represent genuine ancient prophecy or later compilation, they demonstrate the extraordinary hold Agastya holds on Tamil spiritual imagination.
